Libraries have long known that to succeed in the information age, people need the digital skills to make use of online services and computer resources. Northstar is a valuable tool to help libraries help their communities, and thanks to a partnership with Broadband Ohio, it is available to all Ohio libraries.
About Northstar Digital Literacy
Northstar focuses on basic digital literacy skills—such as using a mouse, searching on the internet, and using email—as well as advanced skills, like using Google Docs and searching for jobs online.
Library patrons will find digital literacy help from Northstar with
- Assessments in eighteen digital skills areas that measure proficiency and identify skill gaps. Learners can use those assessment results to celebrate skills they have and focus on areas for development through self-directed online learning.
- Self-directed online learning provides individualized online instruction and practice. Learners can independently access original online content incorporating Northstar standards, instruction, and practice. When learners complete an assessment, they are automatically directed to the Northstar Online Learning (NSOL) content corresponding to what they still need to learn.
Libraries can choose to take Northstar to the next level by
- Using instructor-led curricula to provide guided details for patron interactions or class-room style lesson plan--either remotely or in person. The curricula is easy to follow, learner-centered, interactive and flexible. Each lesson plan includes a quick-and-easy teacher prep guide to get you started.
- Providing proctored assessment opportunities for patrons, which allow you to present patrons with award certificates and digital badges. Those achievements can inspire a sense of confidence and accomplishment in your patrons, and they demonstrate skill mastery to potential employers.
